What makes a prompt template worth using
A template is only useful if it does the hard part for you: the structure, the rules and the edge cases. You bring the facts.
Ten checks every template is written against
Each template is written to cover the ten checks the Prompt Grader uses. A template that covers all ten scores 10 out of 10. Point at a check to see it in the example.
Task:10 Write a launch email1 for existing customers of our invoicing app, who read email on their phones and give it ten seconds2. Background:10 The feature is Auto-reminders. It chases late payments for them and goes live today.3 Requirements:10 Under 120 words4, as a subject line, a preview line and three short paragraphs5. No exclamation marks, and no talk of AI6. A good email earns a click on Try it from someone who reads only the first line7. If a detail is missing, leave a note in brackets instead of guessing9. Example:10 Match the tone of last month's email, pasted below.8
- 1What to makeSays exactly what to produce.
- 2Who it's forNames the reader and how they will use it.
- 3Background factsGives the facts the AI cannot guess.
- 4LengthSets the size: words, items, pages or time.
- 5FormatSays what shape the answer takes.
- 6What to avoidRules out what you do not want.
- 7What good looks likeDescribes a good result.
- 8An exampleGives a sample to match.
- 9If unsureSays what to do when something is missing.
- 10LayoutLabeled sections, the way the AI reads best.
A check counts only when the prompt itself says it. A check that cannot matter for the request does not count against it, and a blank such as [AUDIENCE] counts as covered, because you fill it in before sending.
Variables hold what only you know
A template never guesses your company name, your policy or your numbers. Each of those is a variable in double braces, such as {{policy}}, with a one-line description of what goes there. Open any prompt and use Fill in variables to type your details and copy the finished prompt, or open it in the Prompt Tester, which turns each variable into a column of test cases so you can run the same prompt on many inputs.
Laid out for the model that reads it
- Claude: XML tags around each kind of material, long material before the instructions, and the reason behind each rule.
- GPT: Markdown sections in the order role, goal, success criteria, constraints, output and stop rules, with pasted material at the end.
- Gemini: short and direct, material first and the task last, in one delimiter style throughout.
- Any chat model: plain labels and blank lines, with the material before the question.
- Coding agents: Goal, Context, Constraints and Done when, with a check the agent can run and a report of the result.
- Midjourney: the picture in descriptive phrases, parameters last, exclusions in a
--nolist. - Image and video models: the scene in full sentences; for video, one shot in film terms, with the sound described separately.
These conventions paraphrase each vendor's published prompting guidance, last checked on October 10, 2026. The Grader lists the rules and sources for every target.
What the score on each card means
The number on each card is the free estimate: a rule-based check, run in your browser, that looks for the signs of each check, such as a stated length, a named format or an instruction for missing information. It reads the system prompt and the prompt together, for the template's target model. It is a checklist, not a verdict on quality: a prompt can cover all ten and still be wrong for your case. To see how a template performs, open it in Prompt Tester and run it on your own inputs, or improve it with AI in the Grader.
Questions
Why do you ask for my email after ten prompts?
The repository takes time to write and keep current. Ten prompts are open to everyone, with no sign-up. Your email unlocks every other prompt, free, in this browser and any other where you enter it. It also tells us who the repository is for, so we know what to write next. If you tick the box, we send you new prompts every Tuesday; if you do not, we only keep it as a record of your access. We never sell or share it, and the privacy page says exactly what is kept.
Can I use these prompts at work?
Yes. Use them, change them and run them in any AI tool, for yourself, your team or your clients. The collection itself, the wording and the notes are ours: please do not republish it or sell it. Linking to a prompt is always welcome.
What is a prompt template?
A prompt with the reusable parts written out and the situation-specific parts left as variables. The reusable parts are where the value is: what to leave out, what to do when information is missing, and what a good result looks like. Those are the parts people skip when they write a prompt in a hurry.
How do I use a template in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
Fill in the variables on the card, copy the result and paste it into the chat. If the template has a system prompt, put it where your tool takes standing instructions, such as the system field of an API call or a project's instructions in a chat app. Where there is no such place, paste the system prompt first and the prompt after it.
Do I need an API key?
No. Copying, filling in blanks, the free score, the AI Cost Calculator and the Chatbot Safety Test's static scan all work without one. Running a template on a model in Prompt Tester, Model Compare or the Chatbot Safety Test needs a key from a provider; Google AI Studio, OpenRouter and Groq offer free ones. Add keys in Settings.
Is what I type into the variables sent anywhere?
No. Filling in happens on this page, in your browser, and the values are kept only for this tab. When you open a filled-in template in another tool, it is passed through this browser's session storage. It goes to a model provider only if you run it, with your key, to the provider you choose.
Why do some image and video templates score 9 instead of 10?
The Doubt check looks for an instruction about what to do when something is unclear. An image or video model cannot stop and ask a question, so those templates handle doubt a different way: by replacing vague words with concrete, visible ones. The rule-based score cannot see that, and we would rather show a 9 than add words the model does not need. Every other prompt in the repository scores 10.
Why do the system prompt templates use {{input}}?
That is where your app inserts the user's message at run time. The Chatbot Safety Test puts its attack probes in the same spot, so you can fill in a system prompt, open it there, and see whether it holds when someone tries to override it.
Can I adapt a template for a different model?
Yes. Open it in the Grader and choose another target, and the ten checks are read for that model. With an API key, the Grader can also rewrite the prompt in that model's conventions. Or edit it by hand using the layouts above.
