Full prompt and why it works
Prompt
Proofread the text below for errors only. It is {{text_type}} for {{audience}}, and the wording has already been approved, so the goal is a clean copy that says exactly what it said before. Text: """ {{text}} """ Correct only these: - Spelling and typos, using {{spelling_variety}} spelling. - Grammar mistakes, such as subject-verb agreement, wrong word forms and missing or doubled words. - Punctuation errors and stray spaces. - Inconsistencies inside the text: the same name, term, number format or capitalization written two different ways. Do not change word choice, sentence structure, tone or length, and do not "improve" sentences that are already correct. Leave these exactly as written: {{leave_as_is}}. The corrected text should be identical to the original except for the changes you list, so that a reviewer can approve every edit from the list alone. Return two parts: 1. The corrected text, in full. 2. A numbered list of every change, in the form: original → corrected (reason). For example: "recieve → receive (spelling)". Keep each reason under 10 words. If something might be an error or might be deliberate, such as an unusual brand spelling, a quotation or a technical term, do not change it: flag it at the end under "Check with the author".
Variables
- {{text_type}}
- What the text is, for example "a client proposal" or "a printed brochure".
- {{audience}}
- Who will read it.
- {{text}}
- The text to proofread.
- {{spelling_variety}}
- American or British, or the variety the text already uses.
- {{leave_as_is}}
- Names, product terms, quotations or deliberate spellings to leave alone. Write "none" if there are none.
Why it works
- What to avoid. It names the four kinds of error to fix and rules out everything else, so you get a proofread, not a quiet rewrite of approved wording.
- Format. Every change is listed as original, correction and reason, so a reviewer can accept the edits without comparing two versions line by line.
- If unsure. Possible errors that might be deliberate, such as a brand spelling or a quotation, are flagged for the author instead of being corrected.
