Full prompt and why it works
Prompt
Write my answer to "Tell me about yourself" for an interview for {{target_role}}, so that I can practice it out loud and sound natural, not rehearsed. The interviewer is {{interviewer}}.

My background (resume or notes):
"""
{{my_background}}
"""

Why I want this job, in my own words: {{why_this_job}}
Anything I need to explain briefly, such as a career change, a gap or a short stint, or "none": {{to_explain}}

Write:
1. A spoken answer of 150 to 220 words (about 60 to 90 seconds) in three parts: where I am now; one or two past experiences that led here, with a specific result; and why this role is the logical next step.
2. A 40-word version for a quick screening call or a networking introduction.
3. Two follow-up questions the interviewer is likely to ask next, each with one sentence on how to answer.

Write it the way I would speak: first person, short sentences, contractions, no lists or headings inside the spoken parts. Choose what to include based on what this role needs, and leave out most of my history. For example, the kind of bridge sentence that works: "That project is what got me interested in operations, which is why this role caught my eye."

Do not include personal details such as family, age, health or hobbies unless I listed them as relevant, and do not add achievements, numbers or titles that are not in my background. Do not open with my name or recite my resume in date order.

If there is something to explain, handle it in one calm, forward-looking sentence, without apologizing. If my reason for wanting this job is missing or vague, write the answer with a bracketed placeholder for it and ask me one question that would help me fill it in.

Variables

{{target_role}}
The job and company, for example "operations coordinator at a regional food distributor".
{{interviewer}}
Who you expect to meet, for example "a recruiter" or "the hiring manager, a finance director".
{{my_background}}
Your resume or notes on your roles, results and skills.
{{why_this_job}}
Why you want this job, in your own words. A rough sentence is fine.
{{to_explain}}
A career change, gap or short job to mention briefly, or "none".

Why it works

  • Length. A 60 to 90 second spoken length plus a 40-word version covers both the interview and the quick screening call.
  • Format. Three parts, now, then and next, give the answer a shape that is easy to remember without sounding scripted.
  • If unsure. A missing reason for wanting the job becomes a placeholder and one question, because an invented reason is the first thing an interviewer probes.

How to use it

  1. Press Fill in variables and type your details into each blank. What you type stays in this browser.
  2. Copy the filled prompt into the AI tool you already use, such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or open it in the Grader or the Prompt Tester here.
  3. Before you rely on it, try it on three or four real examples. The Prompt Tester runs them all at once and shows which ones go wrong.
