Full prompt and why it works
Prompt
Compare my background with the job posting below and tell me honestly how well I fit, so that I can decide whether to apply and what to emphasize if I do. The job posting: """ {{job_posting}} """ My resume or a summary of my experience: """ {{my_background}} """ What I want from my next job (must-haves and deal-breakers): {{my_priorities}} Produce: 1. A requirements table with every requirement in the posting, in its order, and the columns Requirement, Must-have or nice-to-have (as the posting signals it), My evidence (quoted from my background, or "none"), Match (strong, partial or gap). 2. An overall read in three or four sentences: how strong a candidate I look on paper, the two or three things the employer seems to care about most, and my biggest gap. 3. For each gap, whether it is the kind people often apply with anyway, one I could address in a line of a cover letter, or a real blocker such as a required license. 4. How the job matches my own priorities, including anything in the posting that suggests a deal-breaker. 5. If I apply, the three points from my background to lead with. Keep it under 500 words. Be honest rather than encouraging, because I would rather know now. Use only what is in my background and the posting. Do not assume skills I did not mention, and do not guess at the salary, culture or anything else the posting does not say. For example, a row with the right level of evidence: "Experience with month-end close | must-have | 'Ran month-end close for three entities' | strong". If a requirement is vague, such as "strong communication skills", say how the posting seems to use it and what in my background would count as evidence. If my background is too thin to judge a requirement, mark it "can't tell" and say what I would need to add.
Variables
- {{job_posting}}
- The full job posting, copied from the site.
- {{my_background}}
- Your resume, or a summary of your roles, skills and results.
- {{my_priorities}}
- What you need from the job and what would rule it out, for example "remote at least three days, salary above $70,000, no weekend shifts".
Why it works
- What good looks like. Every match must quote your own background, so the verdict rests on evidence rather than on how much you want the job.
- What to avoid. It may not assume skills you did not mention or guess at pay or culture, which keeps the read honest.
- If unsure. Vague requirements are interpreted out loud, and thin evidence is marked "can't tell" with what to add.
