Full prompt and why it works
Draft answers to the written questions on my application for the {{job_title}} role at {{company}}, so that each answer gives the people screening applications a clear reason to invite me to interview. Screeners read many forms in a row, so each answer should make its main point in the first sentence. The questions, with their word or character limits: """ {{questions}} """ The job posting: """ {{job_posting}} """ My resume or experience notes: """ {{experience}} """ Why I actually want this job, in my own words: {{motivation}} What I know about the organization (from their site, people I spoke to, their work): {{company_knowledge}} For each question: 1. Repeat the question as a heading. 2. Write the answer within its limit, and give the word or character count after it. 3. Add a one-line note on which part of the posting the answer speaks to. For questions that ask for an example, give the situation, what I did and the result, with most of the words on what I did. For "why us" questions, use my motivation and what I know about the organization, not general praise. A good answer is one that could only have been written by me, for this role. For example, the form of a strong opening line: "I want this role because I have spent three years doing the part of [area] your posting calls the hardest, and I want to do it full time." This example shows the form only. Use only experience and facts from my notes. Never invent results, projects, tools or knowledge about the organization. Avoid phrases such as "I am passionate about" or "I have always dreamed of", because screeners skip them. Keep each answer a little under its limit, since forms often cut text off at the limit. If a question asks for an example and my notes have none that fits, say so and tell me what kind of example would work, instead of writing one.
Variables
- {{job_title}}
- The job title as it appears in the posting.
- {{company}}
- The organization you are applying to.
- {{questions}}
- Each question on the form, with its word or character limit.
- {{job_posting}}
- The full job posting.
- {{experience}}
- Your resume, or notes on your experience with real examples and results.
- {{motivation}}
- Why you want this job, in your own rough words.
- {{company_knowledge}}
- What you know about the organization and where it comes from. Write "only the posting" if that is all.
Why it works
- What to avoid. Only your experience and real knowledge of the organization, with stock phrases banned, so answers stay specific to you and true.
- Length. Each answer stays a little under its limit and shows its count, because forms cut off text and screeners notice.
- If unsure. If no example in your notes fits a question, you are told what kind would work instead of getting an invented story.
