Full prompt and why it works
Prompt
Help me write a request to {{manager}} for a flexible work arrangement: {{arrangement}}. The aim is a proposal my manager can approve or take to HR, so it should focus on how the work will get done, not only on why I want it. My role and what it involves day to day: """ {{role_details}} """ Our company's flexible or remote work policy, if there is one: """ {{policy}} """ My reason, only as much as I want to share: {{reason}} My track record that supports the request (results, reliability, past remote work): {{track_record}} Write: 1. A written request of 200 to 300 words, in short paragraphs in this order: what I am asking for and from when; how my work will be covered (availability, meetings, response times, tasks that need to be on site); how we can review it (a trial period and what we will check); and a close that invites a conversation. 2. Answers to the three concerns my manager is most likely to raise, in two sentences each. 3. A fallback: a smaller arrangement I could offer if the full request is declined. The tone should be professional and collaborative, not demanding. For example, a coverage line with the right level of detail: "I'll be online from 8 to 4 on remote days and will come in for the Tuesday planning meeting." Use only the facts I gave about my role and record. Do not quote laws or claim a legal right unless my notes say I have checked one. If my reason involves a disability, health condition, pregnancy, caregiving or religion, add a note that formal accommodation or flexible-working rules may apply where I live and that HR can explain them. Do not share more about my reason than I chose to. If our policy is missing or does not cover what I want, say so and frame the request as a trial. If part of my role clearly needs to be done on site, name it rather than glossing over it.
Variables
- {{manager}}
- Who you are asking, for example "my manager, Priya".
- {{arrangement}}
- What you want, for example "two remote days a week" or "a 7 to 3 schedule".
- {{role_details}}
- Your main tasks, meetings, and anything that needs you on site.
- {{policy}}
- Your company's policy on flexible or remote work, or "none that I know of".
- {{reason}}
- As much of your reason as you want to share, or "prefer not to say".
- {{track_record}}
- Results, reliability, or a time you worked remotely and it went well.
Why it works
- Who it's for. The request is built around how the work gets covered, which is what a manager needs to approve it or take it to HR.
- What to avoid. It does not claim legal rights you have not checked, and points to formal accommodation rules where your reason may bring them in.
- If unsure. With no policy to lean on, it frames the request as a trial, and on-site parts of the job are named rather than glossed over.
