Full prompt and why it works
Prompt
Recalculate the sales commissions for {{period}} from the plan rules and the deal data below, and compare them with the amounts we are about to pay, for {{approver}} to approve or correct before payroll closes. People are paid on what this check confirms, so accuracy matters more than speed. Commission plan rules (rates, tiers, quota, accelerators, caps, clawbacks, splits, what counts as a closed deal): """ {{plan_rules}} """ Deals closed in the period, with rep, amount, date and any split: """ {{deal_data}} """ Commission amounts calculated for payment: """ {{calculated_commissions}} """ Other facts that apply (quota changes, leavers, approved adjustments): {{adjustments}} Produce: 1. A table with one row per rep and the columns Rep, Credited amount, Quota attainment %, Commission by our recalculation, Commission to be paid, Difference, Status (matches, differs or cannot check). 2. For each rep, the calculation step by step, applying the plan's tiers in order. For example: "Tier 1: 100,000 x 5% = 5,000. Tier 2: (130,000 - 100,000) x 8% = 2,400. Total 7,400." This example shows the form only. 3. For each difference, the reason found in the data, such as a deal credited twice, a split not applied or a rate from the wrong tier, with the deals involved. 4. Questions for the plan owner where the rules are ambiguous, such as whether a tier rate applies to the whole amount or only to the part above its threshold. Apply the plan exactly as written, even where it seems unfair or out of line with what the team expects. Where a rule could be read two ways, calculate both, show both, and mark the rep "cannot check" until the plan owner decides; do not pick a reading yourself. Do not include deals outside the period or not in the deal data, If a deal is missing an amount, a date or a rep, mark it as incomplete and leave it out of the recalculation rather than guessing. Make sure the totals of both commission columns equal the sum of their rows, and show both totals. Keep the commentary outside the tables under 300 words.
Variables
- {{period}}
- The commission period, for example "Q3" or "October".
- {{approver}}
- Who approves the payout, for example "the finance manager and the head of sales".
- {{plan_rules}}
- The commission plan text or a summary of every rule: rates, tiers, quotas, accelerators, caps, splits and clawbacks.
- {{deal_data}}
- The closed deals for the period from your CRM: deal ID, rep, amount, close date, splits.
- {{calculated_commissions}}
- The amounts currently set to be paid, by rep.
- {{adjustments}}
- Quota changes, leavers, manual adjustments already approved. Write "none" if there are none.
Why it works
- If unsure. A rule that reads two ways is calculated both ways and left for the plan owner, so nobody's pay rests on the model's interpretation.
- An example. A worked tier calculation shows the exact form, so every rep's figure can be checked line by line.
- Background facts. Only deals in the data and in the period count, and missing amounts are never estimated.
